Dear Lactnetters,
I have received a question that I can't answer. I have tried searching the
archives, but found nothing. I have permission to share this story. The
mother of an eight month old baby is pumping and storing milk for use while
mother is at work. Recently the mother found several containers of milk
that was still liquid after three days in the freezer. The cream had
separated and the milk looked and smelled normal. The mother feared the
milk was unsafe and discarded it. The containers were found on different
days. Other containers alongside contained milk that was frozen solid. New
containers of milk froze readily. No one tampered with the milk, as far as
the mother knows. (She and the baby's father were the only people with
access to the freezer during the time the milk stayed liquid.) The freezer
appears to be operating normally. The containers are all the same. The
mother always pumps in the morning before leaving for work. I asked if she
drinks alcohol and she said she drinks wine with dinner. She does this
regularly, though, with no apparent effect at other times.
I would be grateful for any information or ideas.
Linn Hodder, IBCLC
