Subject: RE: [BEE-L] Vita honeybee research
Hi Peter,

Honeybees use 2-heptanone as a defense strategy, especially against
smaller hive invaders, including wax moth AND Varroa. Some bees are
better at grooming and at knocking out or even killing varroa mites
through their use of heptanone, than are other bees. However, liquid
2-heptanone, produced by the honeybee is actually extremely toxic to
.....honeybees. This may be a reason why they don't all go around the
hive slobbering over each other. Where mites are found walking freely
in the colony, and not on the bee, we have seen that they can be
attacked by bees and dosed with 2-heptanone. The mites either then die
or are removed, helpless, by the bees.

Next time you see your bees pulling the hairs on your arm, remember
they are not saying, "Hello", they are trying to knock you out!

There's still soooo much left to discover about the behaviour of
honeybees that makes them really fascinating.

All the best,

Max
