Ideally, the mother would TAKE her child.  I kept my godson for 10 days when
he was about 10 months old and conscientiously fed him expressed milk via
cup the whole time.  The mother, (whose husband insisted they go alone to
Europe,) pumped with a hand pump about every 4 hours.  She worried the whole
time that he wouldn't nurse again.

When they returned, little Nicky "punished" her for about 12 hours before he
would nurse.  She tried lots of skin to skin until he finally gave in. But
he went on to nurse at least 2 more years.
