Many claims have been made for many teats/nipples over the years and these
are excellent marketing, though the claims are not independently verified.
These comments are based on my having looked at decades of advertising in my
research.

Even when we don't know whether the product does what the company research
or marketing says it does, there are issues. No matter what a teat does
once it is in a baby's mouth, an issue that is usually ignored is the
process of getting the teat into the baby's mouth. It is pre-formed and thus
the baby doesn't learn how to draw in some breast tissue along with the
mother's nipple. When the baby is offered the mother's breast, after early
exposure to artificial teats, knowing how to draw in breast tissue for a
good latch may not happen. No matter how enticing the claims, I have yet to
see an artificial nipple that replicates this action. Come to think of it,
most products don't do what their advertising claims they do.

I have just finished looking at some literature from medela promoting their
new "Calma" teat. I have yet to see any critical reviews of this product.
They claim that it "eliminates nipple confusion." That's a big claim. I've
seen no research that evaluates this claim. The requirement for baby to
generate suction for milk to flow sounds like a step in the right direction,
but I am not convinced. ... Do any of you have any independent (i.e. did not
come from medela) info to share? Do any of you have any experience with
this product?
