Good afternoon, Lactnetters,

The extreme weather conditions reported in News broadcasts from many parts
of the world remind me of the importance of breastfeeding. Mothers who are
breastfeeding and have their babies with them have food security and no risk
of contamination. They don't need to boil water or sterilize anything.
This isn't the case for mothers who are bottle-feeding, especially if it is
artificial baby milk, but also if they are giving their own milk by bottle.
The loss of stored EBM, if the electric power goes off, can be an emotional,
as well as a practical, blow.

If you are working with mothers who are expressing milk for their babies,
for whatever reason, do be sure to afford them the confidence and safety of
clear and supervised instruction on hand expression. If there's a power
blackout, or the handle breaks off the manual pump (as happened with a
client of mine during a flood a few years ago), the mother still has her
hands. She just needs to know how to use them, and that it is feasible and
available.

I've come back for a visit to this list after a very busy time. Many of you
have holidays, others will be working all through. Perhaps only a few
Lactnetters will be reading posts this weekend. I send you my very good
wishes for a safe and happy holiday season. Please be sure to drive safely,
if driving at all, especially if you have extreme weather conditions.

Virginia
