My prime suspects are now shrews or yellowjacket wasps (since during
inspection yesterday in cool weather I did see a few yellowjackets
inspecting the pulled frames).

Thanks all, the distributions of wings and legs in piles below the outer
edges of the clusters certainly suggests a predator biting off the wings
and legs.
