Hi Peter,

A lot of the list members are relatively young. 
These do not remember or have never heard of "rationing".

During WWII, rationing caused sugar and several other things 
to be hard to obtain. 

I would suggest that beekeeping was encouraged in order to have
a sweetener readily.

In Alabama, we also used Sorghum cane molasses for sweetener.
