I haven't lit a smoker for over a year now and get on fine using liquid 
smoke which is much less hassle and doesn't leave the car stinking and 
in danger of catching fire.  Using a smoker when closing a hive will 
cause more unnecessary stress to the bees than the beekeeper simply 
working gently and carefully.
