Good point. At least in the context of this experiment, no mechanical or cultural controls have been utilized and colonies have been allowed to expand and contract their population and rear drones at their discretion and as resources allow.

Screened bottom boards are in place on approximately 3/4ths of the test colonies for diagnostic purposes but the trays remain in-place year-round.
