Could be that there was robbing going on.

That often will result in a general uproar in the neighbourhood.

There could be a dead hive nearby or someone open feeding, but generally 
things seem quiet until the source runs out and the bees start searching 
for more and start looking for weak hives.

Reducing entrances can help.
