A couple of months ago when I was doing nursing mothers visits in our
local hospital, a teen mom was using a "hold" very similar to the one
described. After chatting and determining that it didn't hurt her nipples
but with concern that her back and/or shoulders would begin to cramp, we
worked toward more conventional (U.S.?) positioning. After a couple tries
at cradle and one at football, we both observed that the baby was happier
before. I apologized to both mother and baby, seems like he knew all along
what he needed to do. Mom was enjoying b/f this way and when I called to
follow up at 3 days they were doing fine. I again apologized for
interfering with their system. As far as I know (we lost contact when baby
was about 1 month old) they continued to do very will.
