I'm glad Pat posted on this case, as I recall reading it and forgot to post
my response to it. If I recall correctly what happened is that the child did
choke somewhat on a food, and the grandmother vigourously patted the back.
Perhaps the child really has a physical injury on the inside, and is very
sore where the food got caught. It may really hurt to swallow perhaps. I am
not sure if this needs to be investigated, or how it would be (scope?)
without causing further physical or emotional trauma. Pat's suggestion at
play therapy, particularly with soft foods like pudding (or how about jello
cubes or jello animal shapes?) seems a good idea.
