A simple trick (which usually works) is to just enclose the link in angle brackets:

<http://news.bbc.co.uk/
2/hi/uk_news/
england/wiltshire/
3220937.stm>

Most well written email clients are smart enough to know that text which starts with "<http://" is a link and will ignore any line breaks until the closing ">"

Much simpler than using a third party site, and it works for most email readers.

It is the added line breaks which mess up the long links, not specifically the length of the link itself. Unfortunately, many email systems "help us" by making the lines in a message not be "too" long. And they decide what "too" long is, not you.
