Dr Rob Buckman, a medical doc who is also a comedian and humourist, 
wrote an alternative  medical dictionary, and defined 'obstetrician' 
thus:

'This term comes from the Latin:
  'stet' = 'he stands'  and 'ob' = 'in the way' '

Disclaimer: this is obviously not true of all obstetricians.
