complementary feeds to breastfed infants whose moms are keen breastfeeders
but are beyond exhausted. I myself was one of those mom's who on day
three of having my son hoovered on to my breast I "broke down" and gave
him 10cc of formula. Now mind you I had had about 9 hours of sleep in 4
days, I still have guilt about it, believe it or not, even though he is 4
years old and still nursing.<<
In terms of your guilty feelings, I'm wondering if you might feel differently
had you supplemented with something other than formula, sugar water
perhaps? I too felt the need to supplement my second (almost 10lb!) baby
sometime during that 12 hrs just before my milk came in but I used a small
amount of sugar water. Had I given formula I am positive that I would have
felt much more the failure AND it may have left me feeling "what the heck, he
has already had some formula so why not continue" I worry about this with
other Moms. I realize that the "no nutrition" aspect of sugar water use is
a concern in nurseries but for 1-2 x use, just to get you over that hill til
morning, I would much prefer using something other than formula!
