Rachel Myr did an excellent presentation for the New York Lactation Consultant Association several years back on the very topic of why Norway never did have the drop in breastfeeding rates that happened in the industrialized world. Correct me if I'm wrong here Rachel, but my take home message was that Norway never adopted widespread formula use because the country was too poor during the initial years that it was being promoted. By the time Norway's economy had improved, health care practitioners were better aware of the risks of using formula.

The side by side graph of breastfeeding rates between Norway and the United States were astounding.

I really truly mean it when I say that I find it insulting that I have to pay taxes for widespread distribution of formula. The percentage of mothers who actually need formula versus the number of women who use it just because its given to them I'm sure is quite different.

Best regards,
Susan Burger
