Kerry Ose hit it right on the head, about how industry may be using
'journalism' to try to create the impression that the WHO is extremist,
against the progress of women (!) or whatever, because they are trying to
get manufacturers to provide necessary information about the hazards of
using powdered formula, particularly in very immature, non-breastfed
infants.

Powdered formula is not sterile. After Nancy Wight's post on the company
planning to manufacture powdered human milk, in some cases 'lactoengineered'
to increase the concentration of certain components especially for use in
NICUs, I wonder what measures will be in place to ensure that contamination
of this powdered product is not a threat to babies. I also don't know
enough about the food processing industry to know whether the anti-infective
properties of fresh milk will withstand such treatment. I live in about the
only country in the world that intentionally uses non-pasteurized donor milk
for our most vulnerable babies. We have good results with it and are not
planning to change the system anytime soon.
