<< I did conceive my twins while breastfeeding my then 2 1/2-yr, almost 3,
son.
He weaned himself when I was 6 months pregnant. Preterm labor started for me
around 30 weeks, after he weaned. I have heard moms told to quit nursing
while pregnant with multiples but not sure it has any validity to it. >>
If anyone has a reference that indicates breastfeeding during a pregnancy
that is at high risk for preterm labor/birth is OK, I'd really appreciate the
citation. I don't think we're discussing only triggering an episode of
preterm labor in expectant moms with high risk for preterm labor/birth, but
it's also about cervical "ripening" possibly due to repeated exposure to
oxytocin over months of time... Also dealing with competition for maternal
calories re: maternal body system maintenance, growing two fetuses +
healthy/functional placenta(s) (and all the other bodily changes requiring
nutrients that this entails), and producing milk (variable depending on
infat's/child's age and dependence on mother's milk). It may be just one more
stress on an already stressed maternal system.
Believe me, I wish the stats were different or research showed it isn't a
problem.
KKG (who had a 40 5/7 week twin pregnancy so knows there can be "normal" twin
pregnancies, but who also knows that at this point in health care knowledge,
we can only know in retrospect--after delivery of the multiples--if it was so
for a specific case)
