Herb books range dramatically in there quality, cost and applicability to
lactation. Personally, I'd recommend Dorling Kindersley's MEDICINAL HERBAL
book for a beginner. It's not very technical, but does provide more detail
than Susun Weed's HERBS FOR THE CHILDBEARING YEAR. There are many others
that are more technical that I use for the chemistry side to assess the
safety, but I'm not sure of your background.
