Just a little story about total number feeding times......
A few years ago I had a mom come in to rent a pump with her beautiful 4 month
old, in the plastic seat of course with a pacifier in his mouth, when I
gently probed for info. on why she wanted to rent a pump, as I always do, she
replied that her pedi wanted her to pump for a few days to see how much milk
she was making and formula feed in the interim.....Oh, OH why did I ask?
..... well to make a long story short after probing further it seems the
baby had gained no weight between 3-4 mth checkups. The pedi immediately
questioned the quality of the mothers milk vs. quantity despite the fact that
the baby was only nursing 4 times in a 24 hr. period. A very "good" baby who
could be easily and frequently placated with the pacifier, he slept 12 hrs.
at night and fed at 8,12,4,8 during the day! Neither mom nor the pedi were
open to my suggestions and off they went for their metabolic w/u- yikes!!
