Hi. We were just passing a newspaper article around tonight about the people lost at sea who survived on breastmilk. The mother did not become dehydrated because her sister nursed at the breast & then transferred the milk back to the lactating mother's mouth. The baby is about a year old & was not along on the journey. Unfortunately, since this experience (according to the article) the mother has not been able to bring herself to put her baby to breast to feed.

A couple of good things came about from this experience--the mother who brought in the newspaper was considering weaning because she was scared. Her babe is just recovering from a bad lung infection & is still connected to IV's, oxygen, & monitors. After reading about these 16 people who survived on breastmilk, she decided she could go ahead & return to breastfeeding. It also got a group of RN's to spontaneously discussing how wonderful breastmilk is & how amazing a mother's body is to be able to keep up with such demands.
