Dear Friends,

I created a "what a physician needs to know about bfing" powerpoint and presented it to first and second year med students.

One slide was the list of health conditions increased by NOT breastfeeding. This contained everything I could think of/find research on. The list was set up as bullet points that appeared one at a time with about 1 sec delay between. I "set up" the background info before starting the slide with explanation of bfing as norm and not bfing affecting health and then let the list run in silence. In a talk, the 40-60 sec of silence is unusual --as they read to themselves the room was totally silent and I didn't expect how well that would impact the message. Shortly, I was hearing gasps as the conditions kept coming--especially when the second row started. Very satisfying.

I have a big question for everyone, on similar topic.

I have been approved to run a class for the Medical Students about research-based advice for parents, to include anticipatory guidance, psychosocial, childcare and developmental advice. My goal is to break with the conventional wisdom and traditional (we have always done it this way) approach that permeates Pediatrics. If anyone has pet peeves they've wanted to smack a Pediatrician for, please email--privately if not a bfing topic. Thanks for any input!
