These are my favourite pet peeves from the ill-informed:
There is no benefit to continuing to breastfeed after 6 weeks, 3months,
6months, 13 months (pick your age)
You'll need to wean to take antidepressants.
Breastfeeding is making you tired, and or depressed
Mothers who breastfeed for more than (insert your time period) are only
doing it for themselves - they can't cut the apron strings
If you wean him/cut down the number of breastfeeds, he'll eat more 'real
food'
You need to wean to take antibiotics (for mastitis)
Thickened formula is better than breastmilk for babies with GERD
That said, I think it is important to remember that most docs are doing the
best they can with the education they have. It is one thing to teach them
the epidemiology (so they know why breastfeeding is important) but what do
they do when they see a baby that is clearly failing to thrive? Or a mother
who is beside herself because her baby is so unsettled and her top is always
wet? They need to be taught breastfeeding management skills. - How to
recognise oversupply, undersupply and its aetiologies - and how to manage
them. How to recognise good latch and milk transfer and the list is as long
as my arm ... Perhaps if you can communicate the sophisticated skill base
that is required to manage lactation, then your students will see the need
to refer feeding problems to specialists is breastfeeding - LLLL;
NCTCounsellor; Australian Breastfeeding Association BC; IBCLC; (have I
forgotten anyone?)
