Again, the question should be, "Where is the evidence (not
manufacturer's package insert) that mom CANNOT breastfeed as soon as
she is awake enough to do so?"!!! Why do breastfeeding supporters
always have to be the ones to justify doing what is natural? The
burden of proof should always be with those that insist on going
against nature (and sometimes there is evidence to do so.)

Many of our anesthesiologists still give the 24 hour "rule" (some
have even said 48!), but we have sent the info from Hale to the
department and some are easing up. When a mom calls asking about
how soon she can nurse, I tell her there are differing opinions and
at one time the 24 hour rule was common. However, there are experts
in the field who now feel there is not a need to wait that long. I
offer to share the info we have (Hale). I usually ask both patients
and professionals, "Why does a person "come out of" anesthesia?
Isn't it because enough has left their system to allow that to
happen? Then there should be enough gone to be safe to nurse."

Winnie
