Some recent references on Indigenous experiences in birthing:

Childbirth (Canada and Australia, current situation, including transfer away from thier land for the birth):
1. Chamberlain M, Barclay K, Kariminia A, et al. Aboriginal birth: psychosocial or physiological safety. Birth Issues 2001;10(3-4):81-85.

Australian Aboriginal (traditional):
1. Callaghan H. Traditional Aboriginal birthing practices in Australia: past and present. Birth Issues 2001;10(3-4):92-99.

Hospital experiences, postwar (2 Australian Indigenous groups, Australian Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders):
1. Thorley V. Midwives, trainees and mothers: maternity hospital conditions in postwar Queensland. Birth Issues 2001;10(3-4):101-106. (on pp. 104-105)

Sorry if this is slightly off-track, but since birthing factors can impact on breastfeeding, and factors such as separation from family through transfer for the birth involve social costs, I'm not all that much off track.
           Cheers,
