If any of you receive the newsletter of the Perinatal Nutrition Dietetic
Practice Group of the ADA, I'm curious about responses to the Spring '98
cover article titled, "Medicinal Herb Use During Pregnancy and
Lactation." Pregnancy and lactation were lumped together as one
"condition" and a list compiled of "Medicinal Herbs Considered Not
Appropirate for Use During Pregnancy or Lactation". I'm not an herbal
expert, but logically think that some prescription meds are unsafe
during pregnancy and okay during lactation, so wouldn't the same be true
for some herbs that exhibit pharmacologic properties?

Before I write a basic letter to the editor expressing my confusion, I'd
love some expert input. Some of the references were old, IMHO...'82 and
even '70...the '70s article from a British J of Pharmacol was reason to
include raspberry on the unsafe list for both pregnancy and lactation.
Fenugreek also showed up on the list, as did other herbs which I've seen
recommended by reputable professionals on Lactnet for various
situations. Private or public e-mail is fine for those who can help me
out. If anyone wants a copy of the article, it's short enough that I
can fax it easily if I can get my scanner to work. TIA.
