Dear friends,
Thanks to LACTNET I tried something radicaal with positive results.
I had a patient this weekend who had a c-section and the babe was a
mec-aspirate. This babe had an extensive resuscitation and seemed
very traumatized. I worked Sat night and had some success and felt
we just needed some patience and the babe would come around. The mom
and babe had little success on Sunday with any attempts at feeding.
The babe did fingerfeed some formula and a pacifier had been used
for this babes very disorganized suck, before I arrived Sun night.
After working with the babe for almost an hour. And having tried
everything. I suggested to mom we try a rebirthing bath, I really
felt she was traumatized and we had nothing to lose at this time.
Mom was totally receptive at 1 in the morning. I placed her in the
bath basin in some warm water and allowed her to float around for about
10min. We then dried her gently and placed her skin to skin and
She BF for 8 min straight, and then fell asleep. My co-workers thought
I was nuts when I told them what I was going to do. I wish I had had
a video of this baby. Her brow was so furrowed when we started and then
she just gave in and relaxed, her whole demeanor changed and I swaer
she smiled. So thanks to someone-I remember reading about this on the
net. I admit I was skeptical but it worked..... This is the first
mec-aspirate I have met who was really traumatized in 15 years. So I
very humbly thank you.
Also I have to give my first presentation as consultant at a CEU
we are giving. I was asked to speak on "Returning to work, pumping
and storing." As a night nurse this is not one of my specialties
Any help would be greatly appreciated, I will cruise the archives.
I have to talk for about 30 min., luckily it isn't until June so
I have plenty of time to prepare. TIA. marci fodge
