Instead of automatically saying gabapentin is contraindicated, why not
do some studies of concentration in the milk?  Maybe no studies have
been done yet.  I will bet the neurologist and pediatrician are just
assuming this drug is contraindicated.

The information I have (I don't have a lot though) shows oral
bioavailability to be relatively low (59%), and plasma levels ranging
from 1-10 microg/ml.  If the m:p is 1, a premature baby getting 300
ml/day would 100-1000 microg/day.  This seems quite low to me.
