I have a query. A colleague of mine has asked me about an old treatment she was asked about at work. This was: whether soaking a breast in a warm solution of magnesium sulfate would be useful in treating inflammation in a case of mastitis. I have checked the usual modern LC texts, and also happened to have an old midwifery text from the library (Jellett, 1952 edn), but none of these mentioned it in this particular context. The only mention Jellett made of magnesium sulfate (Epsom salts) in relation to treatment of mastitis was as a purgative!
Since I cannot find anything in the texts I've looked at at home, my interest has been spiked. I wonder if anyone on Lactnet has a reference, or other information? Please reply to me privately, as well as sharing on the list.
    Many thanks,
          Virginia
