Trophic feedings (minimal enteral feedings) starting days 2-4 of life have
been shown to improve GI motility, decrease intestinal permeability faster,
prevent atrophic gut luminal changes ("starvation gut"), stimulate dvelopment
of GI hormones and help infants reach full enteral feedings faster.  NEC is
ONLY associated with early feedings when you use ARTIFICIAL milks.
