Gentle Birth, Gentle Mothering - Sarah J Buckley www.sarahjbuckley.com - her discussion (on her website, too, in the articles section) of the hormones of birth is excellent

Ina May's Guide to Childbirth - Ina May Gaskin - her notion of a "sphincter law" is reason enough to stay out of hospitals

Lamaze's book, whatever it's called (which has *eliminated* breathing and pushing suggestions, etc, and acknowledges that Mom Knows Best)
