That has been my method.  One mom's breasts were so large, the nipple ended up on the couch - so the baby was placed face up right there - and breastfed very well.  As the baby grew, positions were more varied, including mom sitting cross-legged on the floor and putting the baby where her nipple ended up.

It is important to observe (especially if mom cannot see) where the baby's face and nose end up - as there could be obstruction of the airway - but in the case of the mom I saw, we were able to position baby UP enough that the breast fell away from and not on his face...

A mom of twins I met "table fed" them...(breasts on the table, babies on the table, too...) she liked not having the weight of the breasts and found that this was better for her back.
