Pete: Good point. Tracheal mite could be disappeared for various reasons including resistance. A simple thing is to test a population using Page and Gary test. It is a valid test reflects what happens in the field. Dr. Page mentioned this at ABF meeting in Hershey.   Other chemicals used by beekeepers for varroa control in home made recipes could control T mites. Think of oil + Amitraz. Think of Mitaban strips was first developed for tracheal mite control. Thank of common use of formic acid for varroa and tracheal mites.  It does not need much of formic to kill T mites unlike varroa. I would suggest a Combination of factors could work together to reduce tracheal mite impact including genetics, but once a while T. Mite surfaces. Dead colonies from mites can't be used for breeding. This cycle of out break is shawn in europe every number of years. I have seen it in Alberta if an operation does not use formic in IPM for mites.
