The phenomenon has been studied by Dr Denis Anderson of Australia, the
scientist who named Varroa destructor.

The difference appears to be how the foundress mite uses bee pupal
pheromones as kairomones in order to initiate ovulation.  There is a
constant evolution between the various strains and species of varroa and
its natural hosts--the strains of Apis cerana.

The same appears to be one of the main resistance mechanisms for Apis
mellifera to varroa.
