Wendey wrote, " No, they'd do what they do here in Quebec; struggle to buy
it (formula) and wean them to whole cow milk (possibly mixed with Karo) at 6
weeks-6 months. Yes, people in vast numbers are still doing this (hey mom
and dad did just fine on it in the 50's :-/). When I got bagged out for
buying formula for my bottlefed baby it was not from breastfeeders but from
people who insisted at 5,6,7 months he should be on the common milk and karo
mix. Including my pediatrician... Health officers here struggle to get
people to not use cow milk before *9* months. As in they use 9 months as the
goal. Don't assume people will breastfeed w/o free formula. They sure
don't here."

You mean that they *don't* breastfeed and they *don't* use formula, but they
use cow's milk instead? But what is wrong with this?? Whole cow's milk
feeds, with extra water given between feeds, or whole cow's milk-water-sugar
are two of the options given in the UNAIDS HIV and Infant Feeding Guidelines
- I guess because they are less-expensive alternatives to commercially
manufactured infant formula. You mean these are *not OK
breastmilk-substitutes for young babies??

explanations here ...)
