A woman has contacted me who is breastfeeding a 7 month old. She wants to
get pregnant again. Her OB has suggested she take 4 mg Folic acid/day
because a previous child was born with a spinal cord defect. Does anyone
have any information concerning the use of high doses of Folic acid while
breastfeeding? Dr. Hale says "Excessive doses (> 1 mg/day) are not generally
recommended." Can anyone elaborate on the concerns?
