Dear Folks:
Lactose free formula was tested on about 400 babies for less than three full
months. That was the sole clinical trial. At the end of the trial, parents
reported no difference in fussiness, gas or any other symptom. In other words,
the lacto-free made no difference in infant behaviors.
This reminds me of the days when salt in formula was limited because the
fashionable diet of the day was a low-salt one. Babies got very sick when salt
was left out of their formulas.
So now the fashion is lactose-free......please remember that babies need
lactose to absorb calcium. The soy formulas (which are also lacto-free) have
phytoestrogens which help with calcium absorption; can't say that for the
lacto-free ones. More experimentation in the name of fashion. Yuk!! Poor
babies. Warmly, Nikki Lee
