Dear Lori, From my personal sample of one - my 30 y.o. weighed 27 lbs at 10
mo. (That one sent me to his baby book!) Ate VERY little foods, didn't
seem to have appetite or interest, mostly nursed, old family dr flipped
back his lower eyelid and said he was probably anemic (conjunctiva pale),
gave him a 1/2 dose of iron daily for a mo or so. His appetite picked up,
he figured out how to feed himself -with a spoon! and conjunctiva pinked
up. Proceeded to do fine. Never took daily vitamins (I had nasty
experiences with vitamins and child 2 & 3, didn't bother giving to #4 or
5). Back then blood tests weren't done at the drop of a hat. In fact the
dr I work with (74yo) is very reluctant to give iron unless the hct is 32
and hgb less than 11. And he probably wouldn't even check hgb except WIC
is always on us and the state of NJ Requires venous lead at 6 mo, 1 yr and
2 yr. (Personally I refuse to do venous on a 6 mo old! I'm real good about
getting the 1 & 2 yr.) I vaguely remember kids used to get too much
iron, which is just as bad as being anemic. Good foods containing iron are
in the archives as this has been discussed before.
Sincerely, Pat in SNJ
