I agree with the statement in the catalog.
I'm a peer counselor with a local breastfeeding group, not LLL, in a
rural area, and I'm constantly amazed by the advice and information
given out by well meaning nurses in our local hospitals. They still
give out rubber nipple shields, take the babies at night and give them
bottles so the mom can sleep, tell moms to limit breastfeeding to 10
min. per side, only every 4 hours, we even had a Dr. recently have a
mom stop nursing because she had mastitis. When I've been called in to
help a mom, who by that time is at the end of her rope, I've been told
that we're forcing breastfeeding on these new moms and it isn't right.
Dr's orders can say no rubber nipples, but they use pacifiers, water
bottles, etc.. I don't know about you, but I consider those rubber
nipples. A lot of smaller hospitals do not have LC's on staff, and a
lot of nurses are not well enough trained in breastfeeding. Our group
feels that the biggest problem that we have to deal with is the
ignorance of the local nursing staff about bf. Most are older, or never
had children, and go from personal experience, many 25+ years ago. You
know where that experience led. Most of the time we feel that we're
fighting an up hill battle with our local medical people.
I think that the woman who runs that catalog has probably had similar
experiences to mine, and that's where she is coming from.
I think that you are very lucky to live in a community where you feel
that she is wrong.
LLL is a widespread organization, and she probably recommends them
because she feels confident that they are giving out the correct info.
Also, they are there after the mom goes home to give her ongoing
support.
