There is an interesting Proc National Acad Sci USA article by Hakansson, A.
et. al. entitled "Apoptosis induced by a human milk protein" that might be
of interest to those of you debating the cup feeding issue as it relates to
aspiration of bm. The 1997 LLLI Facts about Breastfeeding reports "While
investigating the effect of human milk on bacterial adherence to a human
lung cancer cell line, it was unexpectedly discovered that a component of
milk in a particular physical state--multimeric a-lactalbumin (MAL)--killed
all transformed, embroyonic, and lymphoid cells tested but spared mature
epithelial elements. Thus, human milk may contribute to mucosal immunity
by policing the function of lymphocytes and epitheilium, directing the
neonatal mucosal epithelium toward maturity and away from neoplasia."
Furthermore, several moms I know have successfully treated chronic sinus
infections with breastmilk. : )
