I think "rough handling" of the baby and forcing the baby can cause oral aversion in the
baby and moms *don't* like it. WHo would? I work with a few nurses that say" Ive been
bending over that bed for an hour trying to get baby Jones to latch on and he wont, now
your here you do it." I always ask them why have they been trying for an hour? And they
say baby wont latch, my practice is to try for 10-15 min each 1-2 hours , if baby does
not latch in 10-15 min, he wont. I always educate moms about hunger cues and tell them
to call the nurse or me if Im there when she sees them, that is the best time to try.
and I always unwrap the hands of the breastfeeding babies in the nursery ( I take the
mitts off) so we can lok for the hunger cues. This drives some of the nurses crazy......
Oh well :) Its not the only thing I do to drive them crazy.... hehehe.
