Your description of the nipple shield sounds just like the thin latex shields
that Egnell used to carry ---before they switched to the silicone one.  I
haven't seen them in about 2 years.  I preferred them because they were
softer at the tip and baby couldn't tongue thrust the tip back into the
breast.  Only used them for babies who had had lots of bottles.  Only came in
one size which, if I recall, was between the two sizes currently available in
silicone.
