The reason the date is August 1 is because that is the anniversary of the
signing of the Innocenti Declaration. Originally it was WB Day, but was
quickly changed to week. The problem is that if we change it -- good for the
Northern Hemisphere; what about the Southern? The Aussies are in their
winter there!
I agree that August 1-7 is difficult for us US and probably Canadians too.
That's my vacation time, and I don't even want to THINK about bf then! The
trouble with everyone having a different WBW based on what is good for their
country is then it becomes a US BF Week, a Norway BF Week, a Zimbabwe BF
Week, and on it goes. Then it's no longer a World experience, it is a
national experience, and we lose the impact of joining with thousands of BF
supporters AROUND THE WORLD! Maybe WABA could come up with a spring or fall
date that would be fall or spring in the southern hemisphere, and wouldn't
interefere with Christian, Jewish, Muslim, or other holidays.
Jan B., who was privileged to be in Geneva Switzerland when it was
happening!!
