Dear Karen:  I would add to Theresa Gutsch's very detailed account about
maple syrup urine disease, that it is listed in the Wellstart
International Curriculum as a partial contraindication to breastfeeding,
just like PKU.  This means that some breastfeeding is OK along with the
special formula, as long as baby's toxic metabolite levels are
