Inquiring from any NICU LCs. Looking for information regarding your practice with orogastric tubes when breastfeeding.

At our hospital, we try to use NG tubes whenever possible but on occasion when a baby is on Oxygen via nasal prong and his/her nares are to small to also put a NG tube in the nare, we may have OG tubes in place. We have been removing them when mother is present to offer the breast. We then reinsert them after the feeding to offer the remaining amount if not fully feeding at breast.

This practice has been questioned recently so I'm looking for standards of practice at other hospitals.

What is your practice? Keeping them in for feedings? Removing them with each feeding? Reinserting them right after the feeding to finish the feeding? (with presumably some milk in the belly) If you remove them, is there a limit to how often you will do that each day if mother is present for many feeds?

Thanks for your help!
