The June/July issue of Fit Pregnancy magazine has a clever full page ad
for breastfeeding sponsored by the non-profit organization Best for
Babes. This is an organization whose efforts revolve around placing
breastfeeding into mainstream publications and giving breastfeeding a
makeover. See
http://www.bestforbabes.org/help-moms-beat-the-booby-traps. One of the
goals is to position breastfeeding such that it secures the funding and
visibility that are enjoyed by the diseases and conditions that
breastfeeding prevents. The ad in Fit Pregnancy comes at an opportune
time, right after the introduction of the federal Breastfeeding
Promotion Act by Rep Maloney and Sen Merkley. If you haven't done so
already, remember to go to the US Breastfeeding Committee website to
send a letter to your federal legislators asking them to sign on to
these bills. See
http://org2.democracyinaction.org/o/5162/t/6359/campaign.jsp?campaign_KEY=1697.
As a follow-up to the request to file a complaint about Mead Johnson
with the FTC, I was asked to write about formula marketing for the
Motherwear blog which can be seen at
http://breastfeeding.blog.motherwear.com/. And finally, a
breastfeeding Call to Action from the Department of Health and Human
Services has been soliciting input from stakeholders in the US
regarding a new national plan of action for the next 10 years for
policies, activities, and initiatives to improve breastfeeding. While
the public comment period is closed on their website you can see the
comments that have been submitted at
http://www.blsmeetings.net/owh_call_to_action_on_breastfeeding/comments.cfm.
