Rachel mentioned the NY Times article on traveling with a breast
pump. Here at the University of Wisconsin - Madison, Dr. Jo
Handelsman, the chairwoman of the Department of Bacteriology has made
a real commitment to her employees and graduate students who are
breastfeeding mothers. Not only does the new Microbiology building
have three lactation rooms (they also double as sleep rooms for those
monitoring nighttime experiments), but she created a fund called
"Moms on the Go." A nursing mother employee from her lab or a grad
student who needs to go present at or attend a conference out of town
can apply for a grant to help take her child and a caretaker along.
That keeps nursing mothers and babies together and allows women in
the sciences to keep competitive with their male colleagues. The
Madison Breastfeeding Promotion Network recognized this department
with the "Breastfeeding Friendly Employer Award" in October.

I see in her biography (at http://www.hhmi.org/research/professors/
handelsman_bio.html ) that Jo Handelsman served on the panel that
authored the 2006 National Academy of Sciences report, "Beyond Bias
and Barriers: Fulfilling the Potential of Women in Academic Science
and Engineering."

Let's encourage other businesses and institutions to follow suit!
