I posted about the Phillipines petition
http://www.petitiononline.com/probf1/petition.html the other day, and
wondered why it had so few sigs. Someone else on another forum also
wondered this, and emailed Dr Elvira, who wrote the petition. This is
what she replied - I thought many in here would be interested by what
she's written:

We would like to thank you and your friends for signing our petition!

We wrote the petition on July 22 -23 and in between sessions of the
La Leche League conference and other activities, lobbying in Senator
Barack Obama's Office and preparing for our lecture in one of the
workshops in the conference, was able to convince 62 people to
sign. When we were in the US, we were also organizing 2 big events
in Manila, the Opening of World Breastfeeding Week in Our
President's Palace and Synchronized Breastfeeding Worldwide which
happened 1 week after we arrived in Manila. We had a total of 12
big events the whole month of August in celebration of World
Breastfeeding Week including launching Breastfeeding Stations in
about 5 malls. We spend a whole day in every mall giving lectures
to the administrative staff, security and maintenance personnel and
mall tenants (about 150-300 people) then to the clients of the mall
then a formal launching with a program (7 am - 6 pm). We also
attended a Senate hearing and had to submit our recommendations. We
are also collating for submission to Guinness World Records, the
registration papers and summary report to create the first record
for "The Most Number of Mothers Breastfeeding in Multiple Locations"
which we did last May 2,2007. The national count was 22,500 plus
mother-baby pairs in 590 sites nationwide but after auditing it
internally then externally through an international auditing firm
got a Guinness count of 15,000 plus mother-baby pairs in about 290
sites. All Guinness required to create the record was 10 sites and
more than the last Guinness single site record which we broke last
year with 3,541 mother-baby pairs. These are some of a few things
that have been keeping us busy since our return from the US last
July 26 where we first wrote the petition. We had a lot more
activities on breastfeeding plus attending to family matters like a
big traditional celebration for the 18th birthday of my daughter.
In other words, the petition was put aside until about 3 days ago
when we decided to put in on line so you are now one of the first to
sign. The first 62 names were not included in the on-line petition
simply because we have no time to put them. I am leaving for Texas
to attend the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine's convention 2 days
from now so I have a lot of things to prepare for before I leave.

Thank you so much for supporting our cause in the Philippines.
Please ask more of your colleagues to sign. I was able to go to the
offices of Senators Ted Kennedy, Barbara Boxer and Charles Schumer
last July, a few days before we wrote the petition. It was Senator
Kennedy's staff who recommended that we get the involvememt of the
American people. They said it would be best if the US citizens
would write to the Senator about their concern on the Philippine
breastfeeding issue.

By the way, I am 51 years old and still breastfeeding my 6 year old
child! Not a drop of formula milk was given to my youngest
child...He is healthy, smart, beautiful and very affectionate.

..

Gratefully,

If I make it to breastfeeding mine when he's 6 years old, I'll only be
48! :-))))) Must try and find out more about "Children for
Breastfeeding"....
