Dear Lactnetters:


I recently attended a conference here in El Paso where one of the
speakers went off topic at the end of her presentation (which was not
about breastfeeding) and made the remark that cup feeding was
"ridiculous" as a method to supplement a baby.  Unfortunately, I only
attended the first day of the conference and this incident happened on
the second day.  I heard about it from someone who attended the second
day.  I called the conference organizer who confirmed that it indeed had
happened, and she said that the speaker had apologized to her.  I have
already heard from one nurse in the hospital where I consult that "Cup
feeding is not considered safe anymore".  This was a nurse who did not
attend the conference where the statement was made.  I guess this is how
defamation hurts a person?  Once it is out, you can't recall it.

 

My question is: since many people heard this and most of them will
believe that the speaker was knowledgeable enough to make this
statement, don't all of those who attended need to be contacted to
correct this information?  Should there be any sort of sanctioning?

 

Please, send me answers privately and to the whole list.  I would like
this to get as cleaned up as possible as soon as possible.
