I have continued to follow this thread when I have the time at the
computer. I notice that there has been much speculation about the role
medications might have played in this scenario.

While I would not rule that possibility out at all, I still think that one
has to consider the possibility that this baby might have had a mucous
plug that restricted his respirations and or the possibility that simple
posiion at the breast was the culprit, or a combination of the two.

I have personally had an experience with both such scenarios. Both of
these happened in the immediate PP period. Thankfully, both parents and
nurses were watchful and there were no negitive outcomes.

Mucous plugs are very common in those first few hours after birth. Also,
if baby is not positioned correctly at breast (or even just in the
parents' arms) and the chin in down on the chest, respirations can be
restricted as well.

Personally, when I care for a mother/baby after birth, I want to see that
baby, no matter who is hiolding, feeding, or whatever. You can still cover
the mother for provacy and not completely put the baby out opf sight. I
talk to the parents about color and the fact that we have to see this baby
to watch for those color changes.
